Steve Jobs on medical leave from Apple

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has announced he will go on medical leave from his position. Jobs had surgery in 2004 for pancreatic cancer, which medical experts have said explains the liver transplant.

“My family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy,” said Jobs.

He did not reveal specifics about why he had been given time off.

“At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company,” he told employees.

Apple stock fell about 6% trading Monday following the news. Investors will have to digest the news about the chief executive as well as the latest earnings for the Christmas season. If this turns out to be a temporary leave of absence, for comparatively minor medical reasons, then this shouldn’t have much effect on your shares. But if the absence is longer and the problem more severe, who knows what will happen to Apple!

Steve’s email in full is as follows:

Team,

At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple’s day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.

I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.

Steve

Google Apps updates SLA contracts

Google has updated the SLA for its Google Apps suite so that they no longer make excuses for scheduled maintenance. Meaning that ANY dwntime, no matter how little, will be recognised as downtime and applied to the agreement with the customer.

At present, when Google alert users to “Scheduled Downtime”, this downtime is not covered under the SLA and the end-user has no retribution via the SLA for a refund.

Google have now fine-tuned their highly-distributed infrastructure so that servers can be taken offline one-at a time or in multiples and the end-user wont notice. This is nothing new however, Google have been able to do this for a while now, but have never included this kind of interruption as part of their SLA.

Now, should a service be made unavailable at Google’s end as a result of this downtime, the end-user is well within their rights to demand compensation under their SLA.

In 2010, the company says, Gmail was available to business users and consumers over 99.9 per cent of the time. This equated to about seven minutes of downtime per month. During that period, there was no scheduled downtime for end users.

Microsoft are currently rolling out a competing cloud-based product, Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS), which is intended to bring the Office suite onto the web with phenomenal new features and services. As avid Google Apps users, we’ve just started trialling the BPOS service from Microsoft and will post an update with our findings in due course.

Nine percent of gamer kids addicted

It was revealed in a recent study today that almost one in ten children are actually ‘addicted’ to their video games. The study showed that greater amounts of gaming, lower social competence, and greater impulsivity seemed to act as risk factors for becoming pathological gamers, whereas depression, anxiety, social phobias, and lower school performance seemed to act as outcomes of pathological gaming.

The study adds important information to the discussion about whether video game “addiction” is similar to other addictive behaviors, demonstrating that it can last for years and is not solely a symptom of comorbid disorders. (Study: http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/abstract/peds.2010-1353v1 )

In the 2-year study of more than 3,000 school children in Singapore, researchers found nearly one in ten were video game “addicts,” and most were stuck with the problem. (Source: http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE70G15J20110117?pageNumber=1 )

Douglas Gentile, who runs the Media Research Lab at Iowa State University said: “When children became addicted, their depression, anxiety, and social phobias got worse, and their grades dropped,”

But an independent expert said the study had important flaws.

“My own research has shown that excessive video game play is not necessarily addictive play and that many video gamers can play for long periods without there being any negative detrimental effects,” said Mark Griffiths, director of the International Gaming Research Unit at Nottingham Trent University in the UK.

“If nine percent of children were genuinely addicted to video games there would be video game addiction clinics in every major city!” he said in an e-mail, adding that the concept is not currently an accepted diagnosis among psychiatrists and psychologists.

Part of the problem, Griffiths argued, is that the new work may be measuring preoccupation instead of addiction.

The Importance of Backups: Stolen Cancer Research Laptop

Sook Shin lost the 13-inch white MacBook, that contained years of research on prostate cancer, last Sunday after thieves smashed the window of her car, and made off with the laptop. Data on the machine was not backed up, nor was it encrypted.

Shin told News 9: “I’m devastated…”

Consider IT’s Views:
Making sure that your computer is backed up is important to keeping your information safe and saving you money in the long run. Having to start over when your computers crash and you have no backup is far more expensive than simply paying for the security that comes with having effective backup in place. This is one area that cutting corners is not a good idea.

Yorkshire Building Society loses customers’ details on unencrypted laptop

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has found Yorkshire Building Society (YBS) in breach of the Data Protection Act after an unencrypted laptop belonging to the former Chelsea Building Society (CBS), which had recently merged with YBS, was stolen from its Cheltenham premises. The laptop contained a substantial part of the CBS customer database.

The laptop was recovered within 48 hours after YBS appointed private investigators, and forensic investigations revealed that none of the data had been accessed during that time, although there had been several attempts to do so.

It was later discovered that the manager had written down the passwords to the computer and left these in a bag with the laptop under a desk overnight.

Mick Gorrill, Head of Enforcement at the ICO, said: “It is extremely concerning that an unencrypted laptop containing large amounts of personal data was left unsecured overnight, together with details of its passwords. What’s more, the fact that the employee did not require all the information to carry out the task in hand created an unnecessary risk which could easily have been avoided; employees should only have access to information that is absolutely vital to work which is being carried out.”

Iain Cornish, Chief Executive of Yorkshire Building Society has agreed to take a series of remedial steps to ensure that such a data security breach does not happen again. This will include ensuring that all portable devices including laptops are encrypted (a measure that is already in place at1YBS), that all staff are made aware of the company’s policies for the storage and use of personal data and that staff will only have access to the type and amount of personal data that is necessary for their work.

For more information about getting your business secure and laptops encrypted, see our Business Encryption Services page.
